What is holding you back? The things you cannot let go of?

Every day is a fresh blank canvas to write upon, a day to be who we truly are, to allow ourselves to just BE, to express what we want to express. What life film do I want to direct, what masterpiece do I want to paint. What do I want to strip away today. Oh how privileged I am.

Whenever I get challenged with past thoughts, past actions which I have judged as wrong, or any other energy which feels stagnant, may it be named guilt, anger, shame, resentment, expectation, should and should not. Whenever I want to rewrite the past. Or find myself holding on to the need to be right or work it all out; or any judgments or stories to uphold my suffering…

I am always humbly reminded of this lovely simple Zen story of the “Two Monks”

Two Monks and a Woman: A Zen Lesson

Two monks were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side.

Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey.

The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them.

Two more hours passed, then three, finally the younger monk could contain himself any longer, and blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted a woman, how could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?”

The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river, why are you still carrying her?”

*This simple Zen story has a beautiful message about living in the present moment. How often do we carry around past wounds, holding onto resentments and regrets.

The only person we are ever really hurting is ourselves

We all experience times in life when people say things or behave in a ways hurt us. We can choose to personalise and hold onto these pains or we can let the weight go.

We all have the ability to let go of what doesn’t serve us anymore. Its a lot easier than we care to beLIEve. Whenever we are stuck in the past or lost in our expectations of the future; none of which exist; we will never be content, because ‘now’ is all we ever have. Drop it now. Would you? Could you? When? three simple powerful questions to ask whenever we are holding or attached to anything. And that means so called good or bad. Can you et it go? can you die to it right now? Because at the core it always comes back to death. The fear of loss, the fear of dying is the ultimate fear of all.

This video — The stumbling stage always makes me laugh; his walk and the faces of those watching are priceless. How do we think us being stuck is punishing the ones who got in our way. Stuck for 38 years stumbling. Holding us back from this moment and the wonder and awe around us at all times.
